Parkville Bakery/Cafe
Location: Parkville, Victoria
Client: Department of Health & Human Services
The brief called for a new cafe and bakery within a run down art deco building to provide real-world training within the youth and social services environment. The re-arrangement of existing confined spaces to respond to optimum use and flows, and to generate openness and aspect was a priority.
Key to the project’s success was the introduction of a new cafe entry point oriented towards the street, which is further enhanced by an external seated area within kitchen-garden, creating an inviting, active (and productive!) access way. Considerable internal structural alterations have transformed numerous pokey rooms into a vibrant, open, light filled cafe space, commercial kitchen and bakery.
The existing art deco building provided the catalyst for the interior design, where vibrant tiled feature walls and new leadlight have been introduced in modern arrangements with strong art deco influences.
